Expectant mothers who got close to marijuana were considered to be negligent or in the wrong. The truth is that the risk factors for cannabis and pregnancy may be overstated and there is a complex range of circumstances that can make pregnancy and marijuana beneficial.
Two-thirds of Americans are supporting the legalization of marijuana and it’s not surprising that a number of pregnant women are also reporting cannabis use prior to their pregnancy as well as throughout the pregnancy. Unreported data from over 360,000 pregnancies in the United States, 16% of this population reported frequent or daily use of marijuana.
In data taken from these pregnant women, marijuana was beneficial in helping them with pain, nausea, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, trauma, and stress. Many of these women continue to weigh their decision to use marijuana throughout pregnancy.
Expectant mothers continue to face concern over prenatal cannabis use. In most cases, the risks are similar to smoking throughout pregnancy if you choose to smoke cannabis. Some of the most common side effects of smoking cannabis drug pregnancy include spontaneous preterm births, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, and having children that are small for their gestational age. Analyzing results over three decades there is not sufficient evidence that there is a cognitive deficit associated with prenatal campus exposure.
Even though there is some stigma associated with the use of cannabis during pregnancy, making the choice to use cannabis occasionally and to choose a proper dosing method can be important to managing throughout pregnancy.
